A Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. I) victor, Artie Schiller is by Champion Two-Year-Old, Leading Sire, and noted sire of sires El Prado, out of a dual grade one winning mare. A grade one sire in 2012, he was also among the top five third season sires by worldwide earnings.
Artie Schiller is sire of the Rosehill Guineas (gr. I) winner Laser Hawk out of a mare by Canny Lad, from the Bletchingly branch of the Star Kingdom line, with other sources of Bletchingly including Star Watch (sire of Hurricane Sky), Best Western, Cossack Warrior (sire of Brave Warrior, and grandsire of Show a Heart), Kenny's Best Pal and Lord Ballina (broodmare sire of a Sadler’s Wells line grade one winner, and sire of Bureaucracy), as well as Dieu d’Or (broodmare sire of Sadler’s Wells line stakes winners), who is by Biscay, the sire of Bletchingly. Other Star Kingdom line broodmare sires to produce stakes winners for Sadler’s Wells line stallions include Black Zephyr, Hula Chief, Kaoru Star, Luskin Star, Marscay, Maizcay, Weasel Clause, Tattenham, and from the Noholme II branch, Green Forest and Nodouble.
Artie Schiller’s graded stake winner Lady Melksham is out of a mare by Keltrice , and other sources of Kenmare/Kalamoun include Kenvain, Metal Storm, Baryshnikov (who would give the three-quarters relatives Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev), Kampala and Jeune.
El Prado is a Northern Dancer line stallion, and to date he and his sons have had limited success when crossed back over Northern Dancer line mares. However, Artie Schiller is sire of two-year-old graded winner Big Chill out of a mare by Danzig son, Maroof, and there are also and there are also El Prado line stakes winners out of mares by Danzig sons Pine Bluff, War Chant and Green Desert. The structure of Artie Schiller’s pedigree suggests that he would also do well with mares descending from Danehill, opening up the possibility of such as Redoute’s Choice and sons, Flying Spur, Fastnet Rock, Danehill Dancer, Choisir, Catbird, Commands, Danasinga, Danzero, Desert King (bringing in Nureyev), Exceed and Excel, Not A Single Doubt and Rock of Gibraltar. Other sources of Danzig to consider include Belong to Me, Langfuhr, Anabaa, Honor Grades, Chief’s Crown (sire of Grand Lodge, who looks a good fit here) and Perugino (a three-quarters relative to Sadler’s Wells).
Artie Schiller is also sire of stakes winner Moving Money out of a mare by Second Empire, a son of Sadler’s Wells’ brother, Fairy King. This encourages trying daughters of Encosta de Lago, Helissio, Falbrav, Revoque and Shinko King. The El Prado line has also done well with mares descending from Northern Dancer through Nureyev (three-quarters-brother to Sadler’s Wells), a strain that is found through such as Spinning World, Peintre Celebre, Stravinsky and Fasliyev. We can also note that Artie Schiller is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by Storm Cat, and graded stakes winner Anne’s Beauty out of a mare by Sea Wall, a son of Storm Bird, who also brings in Graustark. This suggests sons of Storm Cat with a similar background, including Forestry, High Yield, Tabasco Cat, and Mountain Cat, as well as other Storm Cat sons, such as Giant’s Causeway, Tale of the Cat and Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg).
Artie Schiller is free of Mr. Prospector, and the cross of El Prado and his sons with mares by Mr. Prospector has been an outstanding one, with more than 30 black-type winners, including Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra. Mr. Prospector strains that have enjoyed success under El Prado and his sons include Kingmambo (sire of King’s Best and Dubai Destination), Miswaki (sire of Umatilla), Seeking the Gold (sire of Secret Savings and grandsire of Dash For Cash), Thunder Gulch), Forty Niner (a strain that looks very promising here, and has already produced a stakes winner by Artie Schiller, sire of Distorted Humor and End Sweep), Gone West (the sire of Mr. Greeley, Elusive Quality and Grand Slam), Marquetry, Woodman and Numerous (who is broodmare sire of an Artie Schiller stakes winner, and is out of a three-parts-sister to Sadler’s Wells, the grandsire of Artie Schiller), and his brothers Chequer and Jade Robbery. Geiger Counter is another Mr. Prospector source who would duplicate the family of Sadler’s Wells. Fusaichi Pegasus is a Mr. Prospector son who is sire of a stakes winner out of the dam of Artie Schiller.
El Prado has a strong affinity with mares from the Roberto line, siring grade one winners out of mares by Lear Fan, Silver Hawk (whose son, Benny The Dip, is broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Artie Schiller), and Prized and his sire Kris S. (also sire of Arch and Rock Hard Ten). There are two stakes winners from the sire line out of mares by Dynaformer, while mares by Red Ransom and sons, At Talaq, and Touching Wood are also candidates. In addition to Roberto, El Prado and his sons have crossed well with mares descending from Hail to Reason through Stop The Music (sire of Sackford and Squill). Halo is another Hail to Reason horse who would work well here, and might be found through More Than Ready, Don’t Say Halo, Bubble Gum Fellow, Fuji Kiseki and Tayasu Tsuyoshi. Hail to Reason is by Turn-to, and from the Sir Gaylord branch of that line, Artie Schiller has a stakes winner out of a mare by Lord Avie. El Prado is out of a mare by Sir Gaylord son, Sir Ivor, and we can also note that there are at least 17 stakes winners by El Prado and his sons out of mares carrying Sir Gaylord, four, one grade one with Sir Gaylord through Sir Ivor. There are over 170 stakes winners with Sir Ivor in the sire, and Sir Ivor through Sir Tristram in the dam, so Artie Schiller should do well with that strain, particularly through Zabeel (who can be found through Octagonal, Lonhro, Savabeel and Don Eduardo), Military Plume, Sovereign Red, Grosvenor, Kaapstad, Marauding and El Qahira.
The cross of El Prado and sons with mares from the male line of Blushing Groom has an excellent strike-rate, and might be tried here throughNoverre, Fantastic Light, Nassipour, Rainbow Quest –sire of Quest For Fame and Spectrum – and Orientate.
It could also pay to introduce the strain of Thatch, who is from the same family as Sadler’s Wells, and is found in Thatching, Archway, Rustic Amber, Sequalo, Shalford and Tirol.
