B 2001 16.3 HH - Danehill (USA) x Show Dancing (NZ)
$13,200 inc. GST
An Australian Guineas (gr. I) winning son of Danehill, Al Maher is also a three-quarters brother to Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice.
Even though he is a Northern Dancer line horse, Al Maher has done extremely well when crossed back over Northern Dancer line mares, a formula that has supplied nine of his stakes winners. This includes his grade one winner Fat Al, who is out of a mare by Snaadee (giving inbreeding to Al Maher’s grandsire, Danzig), while his graded stakes winner All Legal is out of a mare by Desert Prince, who descends from Danzig through Green Desert (sire of Cape Cross, Invincible Spirit, Volksraad, Desert Sun, Shinko Forest and Magic Ring). We can note Redoute’s Choice and sons working with Danzig through Anabaa, Chief’s Crown (including through Grand Lodge and Beautiful Crown) and his brother, Akaaber, and Maroof.
The cross over Al Maher over mares descending from Northern Dancer through Nijinsky II has proved to be a profitable one. He has two stakes winners, including graded scorer Majestic Music out of mares by Royal Academy (sire of Bel Esprit), as well as stakes winners out of daughters of Tights and Generous (by Caerleon who could be brought in through Alquoz, Tenby and Bletchley Park), and other sources of Nijinsky II that could be tested include Whiskey Road (sire of Strawberry Road), Kala Dancer, Western Symphony and Yeats. We can note that Nijinsky II is a genetic relative to Storm Bird, and out of mares from the Storm Bird line, Al Maher has stakes winners from daughters of Prince of Birds and Tale of the Cat (by Storm Cat, who is available through Hennessy, Johannesburg, Giant’s Causeway, Catrail, High Yield and Van Nistelrooy). Storm Bird might also work through Bluebird (sire of Lake Coniston, Dolphin Street and Blues Traveller). Success with Nijinsky II and Storm Bird would also encourage trying mares carrying their relative The Minstrel (in Masterclass – who is from the same family as Al Maher – Bakharoff and Palace Music, the sire of Naturalism). From the Sadler’s Wells line, Al Maher has a stakes winner byScenic (sire of Blevic), and other sources of this line are Barathea, Galileo, Montjeu, Carnegie, King of Kings and Singspiel. This would also suggest trying Sadler’s Wells’ brother, Fairy King (sire of Encosta De Lago, Helissio and Falbrav). Al Maher also has a stakes winner with a second dam by Last Tycoon(whose sire is from the same family as Al Maher). This strain has done well under Redoute’s Choice, and might be brought in through O’Reilly, Marju, Bigstone, Towkay, Iglesia and Written Tycoon.
From the Mr. Prospector line, Al Maher is sire of stakes winner Kinnersley out of a mare by Geiger Counter. Other strains of Mr. Prospector that appeal here include Thunder Gulch, Zafonic and his son Xaar (from the same female family as Redoute’s Choice), Umatilla (from the immediate family of Al Maher), Street Cry and Vettori (both by Machiavellian), Distorted Humor and End Sweep, Jade Hunter, Secret Savings, Dash For Cash, King’s Best, Dubai Destination, Woodman (sire of Timber Country, Woodborough and Hector Protector), Real Quiet and Unbridled’s Song. From another branch of the Raise a Native line, there is an Al Maher stakes winner out of a mare by Zoffany.
From branches of the Star Kingdom line, Al Maher has grade two winner Oasis Bloom out of a mare by Marscay (available through Blazing Sword, Jetball, Maizcay and Weasel Clause), a stakes winner out of a mare by St. Covet (by Covetous, from the Luskin Star/Kaoru Star branch), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Canny Lad, from the Bletchingly branch of Star Kingdom, which also includes Star Watch (sire of Hurricane Sky, who is from Al Maher’s own family), Best Western, Cossack Warrior (sire of Brave Warrior, and grandsire of Show a Heart), Kenny's Best Pal, Dieu d’Or and Lord Ballina (sire of Bureaucracy).
Al Maher’s three-quarters relative Redoute’s Choice has enjoyed considerable success with mares from the Sir Tristram line, and in addition to a grade one winner out of a mare by Sir Tristram himself, there are also grade one winners out of mares byf Zabeel (who can be found through Octagonal, Lonhro, Savabeel and Don Eduardo), Marauding, Military Plume and Sovereign Red, as well as graded stakes winners from daughters of Dr. Grace and Hula Town.
Redoute’s Choice has a grade one winner out of a mare by Snippets, and Al Maher has a stakes winner out of a mare by the same sire, indicating that it is worth considering his sons Pins, Spartacus and Snowland. Al Maher’s graded stakes winner Speedy Natalie is out of a daughter of Brocco (by Kris S., also sire of Prized) and from the Roberto line that could also be brought in through Red Ransom and sons, At Talaq and Touching Wood. We can also note an Al Maher stakes winner out of a mare by Nine Carat from the Seattle Slew line, which might also be found through Air de France and Khozaam, and a stakes winner out of the Mill Reef line horse, Manntari.
