The 3-year-old ranks of Artie Schiller (USA) have another black-type winner following the brilliant last-to-first success of Dornier in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) at Flemington.
Having his first start beyond 2200m in a 10-race career, Dornier produced an outstanding staying performance to post his maiden stakes race success.
Ridden at the tail of the 11-horse field for the majority of the contest, Dornier improved his position around the outside of the entire field when negotiating the home-turn.
Subsequently delivered on the outside of the leaders with fully 400 metres to race, the son of Artie Schiller quickened to a two-length advantage with a furlong to run before holding off the late finishing burst of $4.20 favourite Parthesia to score by a head.
Dornier became the third individual 3-year-old stakes winner for Artie Schiller in season 2016/17 following the major black-type winning exploits of Flying Artie and Good Standing — respective winners of the VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (G1) and MRC Caulfield Classic (G3). Of course, Flying Artie’s performance in winning the Group 1 sprinting feature saw him become Timeform’s highest-rated 3-year-old this current Australian racing season.
Dornier is one of four winners produced by the More Than Ready (USA) mare Deloraine, herself a black-type winner of three races including the Listed TRC Hobart Guineas. Notably, Deloraine was also a minor placegetter in the Group 1 STC Coolmore Classic.
The first domestic stakes winner to be produced by a daughter of More Than Ready, Dornier is inbred 4S x 4D to both Sir Ivor and Northern Dancer.
