The name of Emirates Park-owned Mossfun is now on the honour roll of the time honoured Widden Stakes after winning the prestigious Group 3 contest with a flawless performance.
One of the first to begin in the 1100-metre contest, Mossfun displayed perfect manners to take a sit just behind an honest pace. Once straightening for home, the precocious daughter of Mossman quickly raced into contention before forging comfortably clear of her nearest rivals.
Mossfun won the celebrated black-type event by a length and is now unbeaten in two starts to date. At her only previous outing the high-class filly landed the $253,500 Inglis Nursery. An $85,000 purchase at the 2013 Sydney Easter Yearling Sale, she has now already won over $250,000 in prizemoney.
Emirates Park CEO Trevor Lobb told TVN in a post race interview: “She’s a very nice filly. She’s done everything right since we bought her.
“John [Hawkes] was very keen on her today after she trialed so well the other day. She’s a real racehorse. She puts her head down and puts the full effort in.”
Lobb added: “It was always the plan to put her in the Inglis [Nursery] race before giving her a little break and bringing her back for here. We’ll [now] just step slowly towards the main ones.”
Mossfun races in the colours of Hussain Lootah, a son of Emirates Park’s principal, His Exellency Nasser Lootah. Other notable winners to have carried the same silks include the home-bred Group winners and resident sires Al Maher and Mutawaajid.
