Son of Al Maher lands the prestigious Perak Derby

January 15, 2018.

Stalwart Emirates Park stallion Al Maher has commenced 2018 in similar fashion to the manner in which he finished 2017 with another notable stakes victory to add to his outstanding stud record.

Malaysia’s Group 1 Perak Derby (2400m) staged on Sunday witnessed Truson score a determined victory over the traditional Classic distance to further enhance the 6-year-old’s distinguished race record.

A member of the same foal crop that included Perth racing’s recent triple Group winner Silverstream, Truson took his imposing CV to 12 wins at distances ranging from 1000 to 2400m, including three individual black-type events on the Malaysian racing circuit.

Assigned top-weight of 60kgs in Sunday’s feature, Truson produced a sustained finishing effort from well back in the field to overhaul long-term leader Littlebitofjoy close to the line to win by a clear-cut margin.

Truson was bred by Emirates Park and sold in the stud’s consignment offered at the 2013 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale Summer Book. He is the fifth foal of the placed Hennessy (USA) mare Ajaweed, a close to relation to Al Maher’s southern hemisphere breeding shed companion Artie Schiller (USA).

Truson’s win in the prestigious Perak Derby continued a sustained period of black-type success for the progeny of Al Maher. The likes of Classic Uniform, Son of Maher, Monsieur Gustave, Money Maher and the aforementioned Silverstream have all won in Group or Listed race company during spring and/or summer racing carnivals.

Next month’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale catalogue includes six Lots by Al Maher. These include a full-sister to multiple Group winner Budriguez to be offered by Dartbrook Thoroughbreds of Scone.

HOOFNOTE: In addition to Truson, the Emirates Park Inglis Classic Yearling Sale Summer Book draft of 2013 also included Boomwaa, winner of the Group 3 VRC Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) later that same year and a 1200m metropolitan Brisbane winner at Doomben in the past week.
